Current maternal mental health screening practices and supports amongst Māori and Pacific peoples in New Zealand were explored in this qualitative research involving interviews and focus groups with maternity carers and mothers of Māori and Pacific descent. Mothers and carers both reported that maternal mental health screening is ad hoc in this country and discussed multilevel barriers that hamper screening and access to supports. Gaps in maternal mental health services were identified, with a need for service improvements to be targeted at patient, provider, and systems levels.
